Section 2 4 The Greeks in Egypt. Introduction The direct influence of Ancient Egyptian literature on Archaic Greece has never been fully acknowledged. Greek philosophy in particular of the Classical Period has -especially since the Renaissance- been understood as an excellent standard sprung out of the genius of the Greeks, the Greek miracle. Hellenocentrism was and still is a powerful view, underlining the intellectual superiority of the Greeks and hence of all cultures immediately linked with this Graeco-Roman heritage, such as Alexandrian Judaism , Eastern Christianity but also Islam via Harran and the translators.
Only recently, and thanks to the critical-historical approach , have scholars reconsidered Greek Antiquity, to discover the “other” side of the Greek spirit, with its popular Dionysian and elitist Orphic mysteries, mystical schools Pythagoras , chorals, lyric poetric, drama, proze and tragedies.
Then philosophy migrated from every direction to Athens itself, at the center, the wealthiest commercial power and the most famous democracy of the time [ note ]. Socrates, although uninterested in wealth himself, nevertheless was a creature of the marketplace, where there were always people to meet and where he could, in effect, bargain over definitions rather than over prices.
Similarly, although Socrates avoided participation in democratic politics, it is hard to imagine his idiosyncratic individualism, and the uncompromising self-assertion of his defense speech, without either wealth or birth to justify his privileges, occurring in any other political context. If a commercial democracy like Athens provided the social and intellectual context that fostered the development of philosophy, we might expect that philosophy would not occur in the kind of Greek city that was neither commercial nor democratic.
As it happens, the great rival of Athens, Sparta, was just such a city. Sparta had a peculiar, oligarchic constitution, with two kings and a small number of enfranchised citizens. Most of the subjects of the Spartan state had little or no political power, and many of them were helots, who were essentially held as slaves and could be killed by a Spartan citizen at any time for any reason — annual war was formally declared on the helots for just that purpose.
The whole business of the Spartan citizenry was war. Unlike Athens, Sparta had no nearby seaport. It was not engaged in or interested in commerce. It had no resident alien population like Athens — there was no reason for foreigners of any sort to come to Sparta. Spartan citizens were allowed to possess little money, and Spartan men were expected, officially, to eat all their meals at a common mess, where the food was legendarily bad — all to toughen them up.

Mubarak regime[ edit ] During most of the rule of Hosni Mubarak , the Egyptian government did not support LGBT-rights legislation at home and objected to attempts, starting in the s, to have the United Nations include LGBT-rights within its human rights mission. While the Mubarak regime did not support LGBT rights, it did not enact an obvious ban on homosexuality or cross-dressing in the criminal code.
Criminal sanctions against gay and bisexual men tended to arise not from the penal code itself, but from a supplemental law, enacted in , to combat prostitution. The law against prostitution also bans “debauchery”, even if the act did not involve trafficking or prostitution. Egyptian court’s interpreted the ban on debauchery to criminalize homosexual relations between consenting adults.
Repeat offenders of the law can face even harsher punishment for what the law views as “habitual debauchery”. In addition to the law on prostitution, other public morality or order-based laws gave the police and judges significant leeway to jail or fine gay and bisexual men. While arrests had been periodically occurring under these laws for decades, a more systematic crackdown appeared to have begun in the early part of the twenty-first century. Beginning in , under Hosni Mubarak , these laws were used to engage in a more sophisticated and systematic crackdown on gay or bisexual men, or indeed anyone deemed by the government to be supportive of LGBT rights.
In , police arrested an Egyptian gay couple and charged them with, “violation of honor by threat” and “practising immoral and indecent behavior”. Their lawyer asked that the charges be dropped because homosexuality was not a crime, but the judge refused on the grounds that two men had in fact “offended” religious and moral standards. This crackdown also saw the “Public Order and Public Morals” code being increasingly used to criminalize the sexuality of gay and bisexual men.
The code, originally enacted in the s to punish westernized students and liberal intellectuals, was now being used to punish gay and bisexual men. The ” Cairo 52 ” were arrested and tried on the original Prostitution and Debauchery law, as well as the newer Public Order and Public Morality code.
